Bald Cypress ‘Shawnee Brave®’

 Taxodium distichum 'Mickelson'

Form: Pyramidal habit.

Size: 40 to 60 feet tall and 35 feet wide.

Zone: 4 to 11.

Leaves: Deciduous. Deep sage green frawns turning orange to brown in the fall.

Bark: Reddish brown exfoliating in long strips. The trunk becomes buttressed at the base. Develops "knees" in saturated soils. Very distinctive.

Fruit: Cones, ¾ to 1 ½ across. Green to purple, brown at maturity.

Flowers: N/A

Growth Rate: Fast.

Description: An upright deciduous conifer that tolerates wet sites.  Light feathery needles and exfoliating bark in large longitudinal strips. Highly aromatic in the fall during leaf drop.

 

 
  

 

Pond Cypress

Taxodium ascendens

Form: Narrow pyramidal habit

Size: 40 to 60 feet tall and 30 to 40 feet wide.

Zone: 4 to 11.

Leaves: Deciduous. Bright green changing to orangish brown in the fall.

Bark: Reddish brown exfoliating in long strips.

Fruit: Cones, ¾ to 1 ½ across.

Flowers: N/A

Growth Rate: Fast.

Description: Similar to Bald Cypress this selection differs in its tight and slender growth habit and a smaller more whimsical foliage habit.
