Star Magnolia

Magnolia stellata

Form: Rounded shrub to small tree.

Size: 15 to 20 feet tall with an equal spread.

Zone: 4 to 9.

Leaves: Deciduous. Dark green to yellow foliage in the fall.

Bark: Smooth gray.

Fruit: Aggregate of follicles.

Flowers: Early spring blooms are white, 3 to 4 inch in diameter with 12 to 18 petals. Fragrant.

Growth Rate: Slow.

Description: One of the earliest blooming magnolias. Commonly used as a foundation plant, possessing a very dense canopy of foliage. Early spring blooms blanket and cover the entire plant for 2-3 weeks.

Magnolia liliiflora x stellata 'Jane'

Form: Small rounded shrub.

Size: 10 to 15 feet tall with an equal spread.

Zone: 5 to 8.

Leaves: Deciduous. Leaves are light to dark green and yellow in the fall.

Bark: Smooth gray.

Fruit: N/A

Flowers: Reddish purple flowers. Late spring bloom.

Growth Rate: Medium.

Description: A rounded shrubby plant producing flowers in late spring through early summer. Blooms resemble tulips and are highly aromatic.
