Maples

Maples are large trees that evoke grandeur and prestige. They produce brilliant fall colors ranging from red to yellow and everything in between. Many Maple trees are large and require large open spaces to develop fully.

 

Autumn Flame Maple

Size: 40 to 60 feet tall and 30 to 40 feet wide.
Zone: 3 to 8.
Leaves: Deciduous. Deep red fall color. Medium to green leaves with a pale silver underside.
Bark: Smooth light gray becoming dark gray and scaly at maturity.
Fruit: Samara.
Growth Rate: Medium.
Description: A beautiful and elegant tree. Tightly pyramidal with deep, intense fall color. Requires slightly acidic and well drained soils.

Form: Pyramidal to oval crown.
Size: 40 to 60 feet tall and 30 to 40 feet wide.
Zone: 3 to 9.
Leaves: Deciduous. Lustrous, dark green leaves turning intense red in the fall.
Bark: Smooth gray to gray-brown.
Fruit: Samara.
Growth Rate: Medium.
Description: A superb maple with tight summer foliage and shades of brilliant orange to crimson red in the fall.

 


 

Summer Red Maple

Acer rubrum 'HOSR'

Form: Oval.
Size: 30 to 45 feet tall and 25 to 30 feet wide.
Zone: 4 to 8.
Leaves: Deciduous. New leaves emerge as purple to red. Mature leaves are dark green bearing a striking contrast against the new growth. Yellow fall color.
Bark: Smooth light gray becoming dark gray, scaly, and furrowed.
Fruit: Samara.
Growth Rate: Medium to fast.
Description: This tree is one of the first maples to leaf out in the spring and one of the last ones to drop in the fall. The summer foliage is the most outstanding characteristic of this tree. New leaves are lustrous red to purple changing to dark green as they mature. This superb season-long coloration is a fantastic trade-off for the absence of fall color.


Autumn Blaze® Maple

Form: Dense oval to rounded head.
Size: 40 to 60 feet tall with an equal spread.
Zone: 4 to 9.
Leaves: Deciduous. Deeply lobed leaves resembling a Silver Maple. Rich green summer leaves with yellow to orange fall color.
Bark: Smooth gray becoming dark gray, scaly, and furrowed.
Fruit: Samara.
Growth Rate: Fast.
Description: A large, fast growing tree with spectacular fall color. Rugged, well adapted and suitable for most planting situations.


Marmo Maple

Form: Broadly columnar.
Size: 40 to 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide.
Zone: 4 to 9.
Leaves: Deciduous. Large palmate leaves. Reddish-green fall color.
Bark: Smooth gray.
Fruit: Samara.
Growth Rate: Medium.
Description: Strong central leader with great branch angles. Dense foliage of large palmatum leaves changing from green to orange-red in the fall.

 


Flame Amur Maple

Acer ginnala 'Flame'

Form: Dense shrub or small tree.
Size: 15 to 20 feet tall with an equal spread.
Zone: 5 to 8.
Leaves: Deciduous. Glossy dark green changing to shades of yellow to bright red in the fall.
Bark: Smooth and grayish brown.
Fruit: Samara, often turning red.
Growth Rate: Fast.
Description: Typically cultivated as a multi-stemmed or clump-formed tree. A fast and vigorous grower that is highly adaptable and tolerant of poor conditions. Samaras often turn a glowing red in the middle of summer giving additional ornamental interest.

Acer truncatum

Form: Vase shaped, with branches almost weeping downward.
Size: 25 to 30 feet tall and almost as wide.
Zone: 4 to 8.
Leaves: Deciduous. Newly emerging leaves are purple to red, mature leaves are glossy green turning yellow to orange in the fall.
Bark: Light tan to gray with longitudinal fissures.
Fruit: Samara.
Growth Rate: Medium.
Description: An outstanding small tree with glossy dark green, star shaped leaves contrasted with newly emerging reddish-purple leaves. Prefers well drained soils.
